Photo Specs How to Download Permissions
What is the format of the photos?
All photos are in the JPEG format, which is a standardized image compression mechanism. Because JPEG works well with photographs, it has become a standard for distribution, both over the World Wide Web, and for other graphics applications. The extension for JPEG format files is jpg. Most of the newer versions of software applications can import this format.
What is the resolution of the photos?
All photos were scanned in at 300 dpi (dots per inch). Becuase the resolution is so high, you should be able to import them into another application, and enlarge them without losing image quality.
What are the dimensions of the photos?
The photographs are all either 2 1/2" by 3 1/2", or 3 1/2" by 2 1/2".
Why do they look so big on my computer monitor?
Most computer monitors display a resolution of only 72 dpi. Since the photos are all 300 dpi, they look much bigger on your computer monitor.
What is the file size of the photos?
The file size varies, but they average about 300 K each.
How to Download
A successful search of the database will result in a list of photos (thumbnails and captions) that meet your search criteria. To view the full-sized image, either click on the thumbnail itself, or on the link "Large Photograph." To download the large photo, you will use contextual menus to save the image to your hard drive.
Once you have the big picture, press the Back button in your browser to get back to your search results.
On a Macintosh
Holding the single mouse button down while the cursor is on top of the large photograph will result in a contextual menu. Choose "Save this image as..." to download the photo to your hard drive.
On all other computers
Hold the right mouse button down while the cursor is over the large photo to get a contextual menu with a "Save image as..." option.
Additional download options
Different browsers, and different versions of the different browsers, may present different options. You may want to try out one of these:
- Hold the appropriate mouse button down while the cursor is on top of the thumbnail on the Search Results page. Choose "Save this link as..." (if you're given an option to save as "text" or "source" then choose "text"). (Choosing "Save this image as..." while the cursor is over the thumbnail will download the thumbnail.)
- Under the browser's "File" menu bar, there may be an option for saving the (next) link to disk.
